Access to Finance (A2F) -

Investment Readiness Pilot Study

This baseline report is part of a pilot study testing investment readiness interventions that aim to increase access to formal credit markets among firms supported by IOM’s Enterprise Development Fund. The report presents survey data on the characteristics of 203 SMEs enrolled in the study, focusing on labour creation, business performance, sources of financing and borrowing, levels of saving for capital investment, business management and marketing practices, and constraints hindering business expansion. Access to credit markets is limited for most surveyed firms, which have an average of ten workers and a monthly revenue of 5,800 United States dollars. Over three quarters of firms rely on savings as the main source of business financing, but most find it challenging to save enough. Financial issues are reported to be the main obstacle to growth by over sixty per cent of surveyed firms. The findings from the report will be used to inform a randomized controlled trial testing the impact of training, coaching and savings promotion interventions.
