This report provides the main findings of a study entitled “Identification of Economic Opportunities for Agribusinesses based on Value Chain Analysis”, focusing on Erbil, Dohuk and Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). The report is part of a series of value chain analysis studies carried out by IOM in ten Governorates in Iraq. This report provides an in-depth analysis of four agricultural value chains that that are seen as highly promising for the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in KRI. The four value chains analyzed are:

  • Sheep ( dairy)
  • Sunflower
  • Cows (meat)
  • Tomato

For each value chain, the focus of the research was on one or two governorates, depending on where this subsector has the highest potential or is already best developed with room for further expansion. For the sheep and cows value chains, the focus was on Erbil; for sunflower, on Sulaymaniyah; and for tomato, on Dohuk and Sulaymaniyah.
