MISSING SKILLS AND PROMISING MARKETS IN COMMUNITIES TARGETED FOR LIVELIHOODS ASSISTANCE

The report analyzes data from over 13,800 business owners in 29 Iraqi communities, focusing on high-demand and struggling sectors and opportunities for skill-training exercises. The findings suggest that supply-side barriers, such as high-paying jobs associated with the government and construction workers, are prevalent in these communities. The largest variation is seen in missing skills, with marketing, textile, and pottery abilities being the most recognized. Gender-based occupational segregation is also evident, with female skills being demanded in domestic work and traditionally female-associated jobs. Communities report difficulty finding local jobs and a lack of vocational training services, often linked to damaged infrastructure, security issues, financial constraints, or lack of local demand. As a result, at least one village in each governorate reports migration to larger cities with more opportunities. For rural community members, finding work in urban areas can provide opportunities for upskilling and securing higher wages.
